My husband was envious of my fingerless gloves, so I decided to make him a pair. Since the knitting stretches width-wise, the only change I had to make was making the gloves a little longer. You can refer to the pattern here. Just keep in mind a couple of modifications: Before knitting the final ribbing, I knit 2.5 inches from the stitches on the safety pin instead of only knitting 1.5 inches for ladies gloves. I also made the thumb 2 inches long instead of 1.5 inches long. And, of course, I chose more masculine colors.
I knit these gloves with Bernat Satin worsted weight yarn. The main color is Admiral, and the accent color is Grey Mist Heather.
My husband also wanted a matching hat. So, using the Admiral yarn and size 8 needles, I cast on 81 stitches and knit in stockinette stitch for about 1.5 inches. Then I switched to Grey Mist Heather and continued in stockinette for 2 rows (one knit, one purl). Then I switched back to Admiral and knit one row and purled one row before switching back to Grey Mist Heather. You get the idea. I continued in this striped pattern until the hat measured about 8″ from the cast on edge (with the roll at the brim smoothed out). On the next row, I started decreases as follows: k2tog all the way across and knit the last stitch. Then purl a row. I repeated this process until I was down to 6 stitches. Then I pulled the yarn through the remaining stitches with a yarn needle, knotted it off, and used the remaining yarn to sew up the seam. End, of course, by weaving in ends.
The hat fit my husband perfectly. Along with the mittens, he’ll stay toasty warm this winter…even when typing on his laptop. Why not treat your guy to a hat and mitten set for Christmas?
