For the past few years, I’ve decorated the same way every year. I have the same ornaments that go on the tree. I have the same tablecloth that I use. It’s the same. It’s tradition. I hadn’t planned on changing anything. This past year was different. This past year, my Christmas decorations were inspired by the movie “Frozen,” and there’s no going back.
I didn’t originally set out to decorate my house like “Frozen,” but one day my daughter and I were looking at one of her books, and it inspired us. We got new decorations to incorporate with some decorations from the past, and I think it turned out really well.
The book we were looking at was based on the Disney movie “Frozen.” My daughter loves the movie “Frozen.” She even has several Elsa and Anna costumes complete with wigs to match.
If you have kids, especially if you have girls, you’ve probably heard of “Frozen.” I don’t know what it is exactly about Elsa, Anna and the song “Let It Go,” but little kids can’t seem to get enough of it. That’s not the point of this post. The point is the world Elsa created.
If you’re not familiar with the story, Elsa and Anna are sisters. Elsa has magical powers that allow her to create ice and snow. The problem is that she doesn’t know how to control this power and ends up creating winter in the middle of summer.
There’s a scene in the movie “Frozen” where the whole world looks like a magical winter wonderland. There is snow. There is ice. It looks magnificent. That’s the way we decided to make our house look for Christmas – like a winter wonderland.
At first, I wasn’t entirely sure how to make our house look like a Frozen inspired winter wonderland, but I used pictures from my daughter’s book to guide my Google and Amazon searches. I found ornaments and other decor that reminded me of ice, and I ran with it. I also bought several photo backdrops to hang from the walls to really set the mood.
I hung snowflake ornaments from the Christmas tree, the chandelier over our dining room table and a garland over the doorway to the living room.
I also added snowflake pillow covers to the throw pillows on my couch, a white blanket that reminded me of snow, and even a shower curtain that looks like a winter wonderland to hide our washer and dryer.
Basically, I added snowflakes anywhere possible.
While I’m really happy with the way the Christmas decor turned out, that’s not the best part. The best part is that I didn’t have to take down all of the decorations after Christmas. It’s currently February and most of the decor is still up. Why? Because it’s simply winter decor and not specific to Christmas.
We put the tree away and the stockings, but there are still winter backdrops and snowflakes decorating the living room, dining room and playroom.
If you feel a little sad taking down the Christmas decorations every year, I highly recommend incorporating some decor that is more winter inspired than specific to the holidays so that part of it can stay up until spring. At that point, I’m pretty sure I’ll be ready to trade snowflakes for flowers anyway.
An added side bonus of my Christmas “Frozen” decor is that if my daughter ends up deciding on a Frozen theme for her next birthday party, I won’t need to buy any extra decorations.
