There’s nothing worse than cold hands, but when I wear gloves, it’s hard to grip things, and it’s impossible to use my smartphone. The solution? Fingerless gloves.
These gloves are so soft and warm, and I can still use my smartphone!
The following pattern is for gloves with stripes in a contrast color. If you want gloves that are all one color, you can just ignore the “main color” and “2nd color” yarn references. I made a pair both ways. Your choice of yarn will make all the difference.
For the pair of gloves with stripes, I used Bernat Satin worsted weight yarn with the main color Bordeaux and the contrast color Sage. I think they’re a nice, casual pair of gloves for winter.
For the pair of gloves without stripes, I used Red Heart Shimmer worsted weight yarn in the color Black. I think they look kind of fancy, and the fact that they’re fingerless means you can still show off your manicure!
Fingerless Gloves
You’ll need:
1 ball worsted weight yarn in each color you want to use
Size 8 needles
a safety pin
a yarn needle (to sew the seams)
a ruler (for measuring!)
Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches
Cast on 36 stitches in the main color.
Purl 2, Knit 2 rib for 1.5 inches.
Next row: (increase row) Knit 6 stitches, make one, Knit 12 stitches, make one, Knit 12 stitches, make one, Knit 6 stitches.
Next row: Purl across
Work in stockinette stitch (knit the right side rows, purl the wrong side rows) until knitting measures 5 inches.
Join 2nd color yarn. Knit one row and purl one row with the 2nd color yarn.
Switch to main color yarn. Knit one row and purl one row with the main color yarn.
Switch to 2nd color yarn. Knit one row and purl one row with the 2nd color yarn.
Switch to the main color yarn. Knit first 10 stitches. Put 6 stitches on a safety pin. Cast on 6 stitches. Knit to the end of the row.
Next row: purl across.
Switch to the 2nd color yarn. Knit one row and purl one row with the 2nd color yarn.
Switch to the main color yarn. Knit until distance from safety pin measures 1.5 inches ending with a wrong side row.
Next row: (decrease row) Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 1, Knit 2tog. Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 1, Knit 2tog. Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 1, Knit 2tog. Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2.
Work in K2, P2 rib for 1.5 inches.
Bind off.
For the thumb, transfer the 6 stitches from the safety pin onto the needles. Using the main color yarn, Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 2. Continue in K2, P2, rib until thumb measures 1.5 inches. Bind off.
For the other side of the thumb, with the main color yarn, pick up and knit 8 stitches around the other side of the thumb hole. K1, P2, K2, P2, K1. Work in rib pattern until thumb measures 1.5 inches. Bind off.
Sew thumb seams and the seam down the glove.
Weave in ends.
The above, makes a left-hand glove where the seam is on the palm of the hand. To make a right-hand glove, on the row where you transfer stitches to the safety pin, knit across the row to the last 16 stitches. Transfer 6 stitches to a safety pin. Cast on 6 stitches. Knit the last 10 stitches. Otherwise, work as directed above.
These were intended to be ladies gloves, but they stretch enough that they fit my husband. I’m going to work on a navy and grey striped pair for him next. Men get cold hands in the winter too!
